Eastern Mountains

Day 20, Friday, July 21, 2000
North Conway, NH to South Portland, ME
106 Miles, 2300 feet of climbing

by Roger Pierce

Our last breakfast, in a dining room, overlooking the mountains, cloth napkins, a buffet that the staff will not let us devastate, waitresses delivering orange juice on demand, a talented and busy omelette chef. Lon must have saved this for last so as not to spoil us.

A crisp, clear morning, with a deep blue sky. A course with mostly downhill, but enough climbing to keep us warm. With not a lot of terrain to spread us out, there were big crowds at the stops, especially lunch where Susan struggled to keep up with the demand.

A final regrouping at the bowling alley, and then a swarm of 60 bicyclists took over one lane as we headed in for the last three miles. A group picture, and then prepare to depart.

The final banquet was a sumptuous feast featuring veggie lasagna, chicken wrapped around stuffing, fish wrapped around stuffing, and apple pie a la mode. Everyone received their plaque commemorating their ride, and Hall of Fame jerseys were presented to Phil Bohaty, Michael Kerrigan, John Lake, William Phillpotts, and Doug Slack, who all completed their 10,000th PAC Tour mile during the trip. And Steve celebrated his 31st birthday.
