Weather:
61 degrees and clear in the morning, warming
to mid 80's, humid and patchy clouds in the afternoon. Light
tail winds made it a perfect day!
|
Points of Interest:
Started to see the Spanish moss and deep
southern scenery, big porches and slower, laid-back lifestyle.
Dogs were too tired to give much of a
chase.
Palm trees.

Highlights:
At each stop we would say, "Well
this is the last 1st stop of the day" or "This is the
last 2nd stop of the day" and so on. People started getting
a little edgy and complained that we were dragging it out and
being a bit melodramatic...so we cut it back.
We all got together and formed a huge
pace line at about mile 80 and rode together and then everyone
waited at mile 102 to ride into Folly Beach as a group. Seeing
the hotel was such a rush and then dipping our wheels in the
Atlantic made it all come together.
We body surfed for about an hour and tried
to soak in the immensity of our accomplishment.
The banquet was the perfect way to end
the trip. The food was plentiful and certainly exceeded the sketchy
dive restaurants we've been eating in lately. The award ceremony
provided many thoughts and memories and a lot of laughs. Everyone
walked out onto the pier afterward and said their final goodbyes.

People We Rode With:
We rode with everyone at some point along
the way today. There was a stronger sense of community within
the group today.

Comments/Quotes:
The best analogy for the last day came
from Lon who noted that it "was like taking down the Christmas
tree".
Tracy wrote a great poem and read it at
the banquet. We will post it as soon as it is available.
As the trip comes to an end and we pack
up and head off to our respective homes, we just want to say
thanks to all of the riders and the staff of the 1998 PAC Tour
Southern Transcontinental. We have had the time of our lives
and truly enjoyed biking across this great land with all of you.
Cheers and congrats!!!
