Today's Journal written by Guest Correspondent, James

Date: 10/12/98
Fr: Gainesville, GA
To: Greenwood, SC
Total Miles: 124
Feet Climbed: 3,600
Weather:
I have no idea how hot or cold it was today because my nifty bike computer with the built-in thermometer was dislodged by some particularly obnoxious "speed ripples" yesterday and flew into some Georgia weeds where it's still ticking away as I write. However, it didn't seem as chilly this morning as yesterday (no tights necessary), and it felt quite warm (and muggy) by the time we got to South Carolina. Not as warm and muggy as it was at my brother's wedding in Greenville, SC, though (in case you were there).
Points of Interest:
Alas, there wasn't anything particularly spectacular today. Well, there was that big water tower in the town of Iva that said "Iva" on it. Otherwise, it was lots of nice houses with porches and swings.
Highlights:
Passing our final state sign was a big highlight for everyone, I think. The lunch stop was beautiful, which made it even harder than usual to get back in the saddle. Oh, and we had sloppy joes for lunch (my idea).
People We Rode With:
Getting everyone to leave at different times has become impossible. Everyone seems to want to hit the road as soon as they can choke down their oatmeal. I rode part of the first leg today with the famous Muma brothers. In fact, we managed to stave off Team Tandem long enough to have all three of PAC Tour's Spinergy-wheel-equipped bicycles arrive at the rest stop first.
After that, I rode with Lon Haldeman for a short while. You can learn a lot about riding a bicycle just by following him. He never, ever stops pedaling, for one thing. We talked about the weather and why the new bicycle computer he installed for me didn't seem to be working right.
For the rest of the day, I stuck to my usual late-PAC Tour spot in the back of the pack. There are a lot of advantages to riding in the back:
-- You get to hear Susan Notorangelo say things like "Car back -- WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!"
-- By the time you get to them, the dogs are either tired out or bored with bicyclists.
-- When you get to the motel, you never need to wait for your room to be ready.
Comments/Quotes:
Along the way we have passed innumerable church signs - here are some of the best:
"Sign Broke, Message Inside"
"Fly or Fry, its your choice"
"You are only a blink away from eternity"
"CH__CH, whats missing? U R
"He who plants kindness, harvests love"
"Christians aren't perfect, they're just saved"
"Faith plus Patience equals Hope"
"No God, No Peace, Know God, Know Peace"
