Date: 10/07/98
Fr: Lula, MS
To: Tupelo, MS
Total Miles: 139
Feet Climbed: 3,200
Weather:
Dark and dreary the entire day - but it didn't rain!!!!!!
Cold most of the day (59 degree's in the AM, high in the upper 60's).
Very light cross winds.

Points of Interest:
We were riding on back roads the entire day - we saw rural Mississippi which consisted of farms (cotton) and cattle ranches.
The Kudzu vine (see picture) was amazing - it literally covers everything in its path including tall trees.
Mississippi is a beautiful state - the rolling hills and lush green landscape were invigorating.
Highlights:
Flat tires continued to hinder the progress of many riders. Fortunately, Bruce and Brian were both "flat free" today.
The dogs were out in force today - none were ferocious. We now rate dogs by top speed - the fastest today was a 24 mph dog. We've encountered 27 mph dogs on previous days.
We enjoyed a great steak dinner with Ed tonight.
People We Rode With:
Brian and Bruce rode together the entire day. We started out a bit slow after making a couple wrong turns. But eventually got on track - our total mileage for the day was 142.
Total Saddle Time: 7 hrs 18 min. (avg speed about 19.3 mph)

Comments/Quotes:
After having breakfast in a parking lot for the past 18 days, its starting to feel quite normal.
Sleeping in past 6 AM seems like a remote dream.
One can learn much about a person by the way they cope with the challenges of this adventure. The exact same stressors produce vastly different responses. Overall, the coping mechanisms of all riders on this trip are outstanding.

 Go to Next Day

A reporter, Dr. Jim Pratt (retired professor) from the Oxford Eagle came out to interview Don and Evelyn (about the trip) at the lunch stop today

A good bye picture with Barb who headed back to Nebraska today - we will really miss her enthusiasm, her humor, her perpetual optimism, and not least of all her magic fingers!

Bruce climbing a short hill with Kudzi vine engulfing the trees and ground on both sides of the road. This vine has devastated much of the landscape in Mississippi.

Another welcome sign with Brian doing his thing in the foreground.

What's that bright yellow ball on the horizon? Yes, it is the sun, something we haven't seen for 5 days!
