Date: 9/30/98
Fr: Brownfield, TX
To: Aspermont, TX
Total Miles: 130
Feet Climbed: 1,600
Weather:
Clear and mild am about 65 degrees with morning dew that made our bikes wet.
Mostly clear with small puffy white clouds in the pm and very hot -- over 100 degrees.
We had light cross winds and some tail winds most of the day and headwinds for the last 6 miles.
Points of Interest:
Went through the city of Post named after the founder of the cereal brand.
More oil and cotton fields. Lots of farm equipment.
A lot of dogs chased us along the road.
Highlights:
Rolling hills beginning at mile 51 and nice shoulders made for fun riding.
Another "pace line" crash occurred just before the first sag today. Two riders were injured but neither required emergency care. Both riders landed on their shoulders and hands and have numerous scrapes and bruises. We anticipate both riders will ride again tomorrow.
Bruce had another tire problem - the "almost new (200 miles)" Specialized tire formed a large "bubble" and had to be replaced.
People We Rode With:
Brian rode with Ed and Lon and Susan (on their tandem) into the first stop, solo until lunch, with Rich to the last stop and then with Lon to the motel.
Bruce rode solo to the first stop because everyone was hammering down and he couldn't catch anyone from behind! After providing some first aid to both riders at the first SAG, Bruce also rode with Lon and Susan. After lunch, Bruce rode with Ed and formed "Team Michigan".
Bruce's saddle time - 6 hrs. 28 min. (avg. speed = 20.1 mph).
Brian is abstaining from including his riding time and average speed so as not to increase an already competitive environment!
Comments/Quotes:
As if the 4 or 5 mistakes made by my (Brian's) bike store weren't enough, I found out that they put on the wrong set of rear wheel gears which made it much harder climbing the mountains...just wanted to send a special thanks to R&A Cyclery in Brooklyn.
We are searching for other guest correspondents but haven't had much luck so far.
