Date: 9/29/98
Fr: Roswell, NM
To: Brownfield, TX
Total Miles: 140
Feet Climbed: 1,600
Weather:
Mild and clear am and 68 degrees.
Afternoon mostly clear heating up to 95 degrees.
Steady 10 mph cross winds at 45 degree angle gusting to 20 mph and occasional headwinds. Not a pretty site for our 10th day with 140 miles.
Points of Interest:
Cotton fields.
Oil fields.
Roads so flat you can see the curvature of the Earth.
We rode through a real "ghost town" (Tokio)- there were 15 - 20 abandoned buildings including homes, a school, and several storefronts.
Highlights:
Brian has finally mastered the art of the one-handed lip balm application (Bruce uses his mouth to hold the cap which isn't as sanitary!).
Dairy Queen stop at mile 107.5 for a root beer float.
People We Rode With:
Brian rode solo (really, I'm not being anti-social, it's just lonely out in front).
Bruce rode off the back of the pack (sweeper) until lunch and then put the hammer down.
Today was grueling for many of the riders due to the combination of wind, heat, mileage and the monotonous scenery. Several riders took the sag wagon from the lunch stop to the hotel.
Comments/Quotes:
A great quote from our route card regarding the scenery in West Texas - "When you get the mountains and the trees out of the way, you can finally see something."
The drivers in Texas are very polite - they wave at us, they give us plenty of room. The highways are great for cycling- the shoulder is smoother than the road.
