Date: 9/26/98
Fr: Springerville, AZ
To: Socorro, NM
Total Miles: 157
Feet Climbed: 4,000
Weather:
Clear and a cold 40 degrees at start. Warmed up quickly by first stop. People were stripping off outerwear.
Clear all day with a high in the mid 80's and blustery wind shifting from tail wind to crosswind to headwind.
Points of Interest:
A very large, shinny (dead) rattlesnake was sited by several riders.
We passed an observatory that consisted of many large satellite dishes to detect radio waves from distant objects in space. The satellite dishes are 100 feet tall and weigh 200 tons. They can detect activity 60 million quadrillion miles away.
Highlights:
The scenery was peaceful and quiet - mostly open plains with distant mountains. You might expect Hoss and Little Joe to ride up at any moment! Lots of pickup trucks!
We saw very few people and rode through a couple of very tiny, "one horse" towns. The Mayor of one of the towns came out to chat with us.
People We Rode With:
Bruce and Brian rode together in the morning up until lunch with Ned, Rich, Brian U. and a brief stretch with Lon.
After lunch Bruce rode partly solo and partly with Ned.
Brian rode solo mostly with a brief stretch with Brian U.
Comments/Quotes:
The altitude really became apparent - it felt like we did enough breathing for 300 miles!
One stretch of Route 60 was perfectly straight for 25 miles!
