Date: 9/23/98
Fr: Gila Bend, AZ
To: Globe, AZ
Total Miles: 148
Feet Climbed: 5,540
Weather:
Bright sunrise with high patchy clouds about 68 degrees.
Clear and sunny in the afternoon about 90 degrees .
Not much of a wind all day.
Points of Interest:
Casa Grande Ruins.
Unbelievable panoramic views of red, brown and white rock with some green shrubs and amazing cactus. Large boulders and tumble weeds everywhere. Looks like the old western movies. If you look hard enough you can picture covered wagons and early settlers.
Highlights:
Breakfast at 5:45 am Long, flat ride before lunch but much more climbing in the afternoon. Crazy tunnel through mountains which was really really scary and loud when trucks drove by.
Hard climbing but nice descent at the end of the day. Plenty of stops to get gatorade and food.
People We Rode With:
Brian rode with the tandem (Leigh and Forrest), Bill, Peter, Ed, Howie and Pat and the other tandem with Marty and Lisa until lunch and then went solo to hotel.
Bruce rode with Frank, Ned in the AM. The rest of the day was chaotic due to numerous flat tires (4 in total!). The last section was ridden with Ron, a geologist and engineer. We rode past several copper mines.
Comments/Quotes:
2nd hardest day based on mileage and feet climbed (day 1 was hardest) but this day felt a lot harder!
Saw some ugly road kill (deer and fox).
Bruce's quadriceps are now lost at sea.
The riders on this trip come from varied backgrounds - dinner and SAG stop conversation is wonderful.

SAG stop #1 - riders are filling up their bottles and "camel backs" with gatorade for the second (and much hotter) stage

That's better
