Date: 9/22/98
Fr: Yuma, AZ
To: Gila Bend, AZ
Total Miles: 118
Feet Climbed: 2,100
Weather:
Hot, hot, hot. 100 degree's at the lunch stop (in the shade).
Moderate cross winds and limited space on highway made it hard to "draft" behind other riders.
Mostly sunny.
Points of Interest:
We were in the desert all day long. Much of the riding was actually on a freeway (its legal if there are no other roads available).
The motorists in AZ and CA are much more tolerant of bike riders than in Michigan.

Highlights:
Ice and cold gatorade.
Most riders consumed more than 275 ounces of fluid (80% was gatorade).
Gila Bend has a Dairy Queen!!!!!!
The "Space Age Lodge" is in the center of Gila Bend and is the main tourist attraction. It boasts a replica of the lunar landing module (right by the pool) and a "space" mural hand painted on the lobby ceiling. If you're going to Gila Bend you don't want to miss this (actually, you can't).
People We Rode With:
Brian road with the Tandem riders Leigh and Forrest, Peter, Pierce, Ned and Ed. Also rode with Ed behind Lon and Susan's tandem at about 28 miles per hour.
Bruce rode with Frank and Ned but did not take it easy.

Comments/Quotes:
Bruce and Brian are now known as the "Spinergy Brothers" (we both have spinergy wheels).
Bruce's quadriceps are now sailing on unchartered waters (320 miles in 3 days).
We can't believe the early settlers actually crossed the desert without ice or gatorade.
We were never stopped by the Border Patrol - illegal aliens should consider dressing up as cyclists to cross the border.
